Hershey, Pennsylvania is located in Dauphin County. Hershey is often referred to as “Chocolatetown, USA,” because it was basically built on chocolate.
When Milton S. Hershey decided on this rural location to construct what would become the world’s largest chocolate manufacturing plant, his plan was not limited to producing chocolate. Mr. Hershey envisioned a complete new community around his factory. He built a model town for his employees and their families that included comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school system and extensive recreational and cultural opportunities. By 1907 he built an amusement park to offer recreation and leisure for the chocolate company employees. Today Hersheypark has expanded to include over 65 rides and attractions, including over 12 roller coasters, a water park and an 11-acre zoo; ZooAmerica.
In 1909, unable to have children of their own, Mr. Hershey and his wife Catherine established a school for orphan boys that today is known as the Milton S. Hershey School. This boarding school continues to serve the needs of students with a variety of social and financial needs. Thanks to the endowment of the Hershey’s entire fortune this is one of the wealthiest schools in the world.
Tourism has become a major industry for Hershey. The Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company, also started by Milton Hershey, is responsible for bringing millions of visitors into the town each year. This business entity owns and operates: Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, Giant Center, Hershey Theater, The Hershey Bears, The Hotel Hershey, The Hershey Country Club, and more.
Hershey is also home to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center which is world renowned for its clinical research and was recognized as one of the best Children’s Hospitals according to U.S. News & World Report’s magazine.
Hershey is in the Derry Township School District. Residents are attracted by the employment, cultural, and recreational opportunities that Hershey offers to people of all ages and walks of life.
